IEDA Resources for Education
05-2012: The newly-updated IEDA education page provides quick links to education materials aimed at university and school audiences, to tutorials that show how IEDA tools can be used in an education setting, and to information on workshops.
Contributed Education Material
In winter 2012, learning activities that use IEDA resources were solicited from members of the IEDA user community. A range of material was contributed. It covers topics spanning plate tectonics, earthquakes and volcanoes, geochemistry and marine biology. The activities so far received are listed here. Contributions are most welcome. To send an activity, please contact us at info@iedadata.org.
Learning Modules
Also linked from the IEDA education page are activities developed as part of the MARGINS mini-lessons project, along with GeoMapApp and Virtual Ocean education modules archived in the Earth Exploration Toolkit system, and GeoMapApp learning activities targetted at K-12 students.
Workshops
Recent hands-on workshops that highlight IEDA data and education resources include a pre-AGU event on the nature of magma generation at convergent margins; a workshop for marine geologists at Rutgers University; and, a GeoPRISMS-focussed data session at the April 2012 EarthScope-GeoPRISMS ENAM planning meeting. If you are interested in having us present a hands-on workshop tailored for your institution, please see the IEDA workshop page for information.
Video Tutorials
Over the last quarter, video tutorials covering IEDA resources have been posted on-line. The GeoMapApp channel on YouTube currently contains more than twenty short tutorials covering the basics of the application. In addition, tutorials that describe different ways of searching for data with the MGDS Search For Data function are given here.
MediaBank
MediaBank, an on-line image gallery, has been updated with a range of images of interest to educators at all levels. Each image includes a detailed description, and most have a link for a
high-resolution downloadable version.
Summer Internships
Support may be available for an intern to work in the IEDA group during the summer. If interested, please send e-mail to us at info@iedadata.org.
