We deliver catalogs, maps, and data through standard programmatic interfaces, and use the MapServer software platform as part of our backend. Web Services enable machine to machine transfer of database content, and also enable the development of new and innovative Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). A variety of OGC-enabled clients, both freeware and commercial packages, including User-friendly Desktop Internet GIS (uDig), GeoMapApp, Gaia, NASA World Wind, and ArcGIS can be used to directly access some of our content. Our data and metadata holdings can be accessed through a variety of web service protocols:
Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) WxS Services
WxS Services can be used for live access to many of our data holdings
- The EarthChem WFS Service is a full transactional implementation of the OpenGIS Consortium’s Web Feature Server specification. More information at: http://ecp.iedadata.org/webservices
- GMRT Web Map Services (WMS) allows any OGC-enabled client to create map imagery from our Global Multi-Resolution Topography (GMRT). Use one the following URLS to access these data:
- Mercator:
- South Polar Stereo:
- WGS 84 / Arctic Polar Stereographic (EPSG:3995)
- Geochron
- Marine-Geo Digital Library (MGDL) WFS provides access to our global catalog of data acquisition events including camera tows, CTD stations, instrument deployments, submersible locations, and survey lines.
- SESAR
- WFS provides the access to the top level samples core metadata in SESAR system.
- WMS provides the distribution map of the top level samples in SESAR system.
- The USAP-DC WFS allows an OGC-enabled client to access dataset records of the Antarctic Master Directory, with data download links where available. Specify the following URL to your client:
- Full WFS capabilities

IEDA REST-type Services
We offer REST-type Services to enable direct queries to our databases:
- Academic Seismic Portal
- View metadata for seismic data sets by cruise: http://www.marine-geo.org/services/seismicxml/xml
- EarthChem Portal
- The EarthChem REST Search Service accepts GET string variables which determine search criteria
http://ecp.iedadata.org/rest_search_documentation
- The EarthChem REST Search Service accepts GET string variables which determine search criteria
- GMRT REST Web Services are used to drive the GMRT MapTool and include:
- GMRT Grid Server (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) is a REST-type service for direct access to gridded data from the GMRT Synthesis. Requested data may be up to 2GB, or approximately 20 by 20 degrees at 100 meters per node (maximum available resolution). A variety of output formats are supported. more information about the service is available from its documentation page. (Output formats: GMT3 NetCDF, COARDS compliant NetCDF, ESRI ASCII, and GeoTIFF)
- GMRT Attribution Service (Documentation and URL builder, WADL)
- GMRT Image Server (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides access to images from the GMRT Synthesis. Requested images may be up to 8000 pixels in either dimension. (Output format: jpeg)
- GMRT Point Server (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides access to point data from the GMRT Synthesis. Point data is retrieved from the highest resolution data available. (Output formats: json, geojson, plain text, xml)
- GMRT Profile Server (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides access to bathymetry profiles from the GMRT Synthesis. Profiles are currently 100 points and can be specified as a single line or a multiline segment. (Output formats: json, geojson, plain text)
- Marine-Geo Digital Library (MGDL) File Download Services
- MGDS FileServer (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides access to file and data set level metadata from the Marine-Geo Digital Library including detailed file boundary geometries. This service allows for discovery of data files identifiers for direct download using FileDownloadServer.
- MGDS FileDownloadServer (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides a direct interface to download single files in the Marine-Geo Digital Library. Use FileServer to find the data file identifiers for files of interest and retrieve them with this service. Please ensure that all downloaded files include the provided data provenance README file for downstream use and proper data citation.
- MGDS ArchiveDownloadServer (Documentation and URL builder, WADL) provides a direct interface to download full data sets or up to 10 unrelated files in the Marine-Geo Digital Library as a tar archive. Please ensure that all downloaded files include the provided data provenance README file for downstream use and proper data citation.
- SESAR REST web services
- Sample Registration web service allows the user to register sample by uploading XML file.
- Validate User Credential and Get User Code(s) web service allows the user to validate login and password and provides the list of user codes if valid.
- IGSN List web service provides a list of IGSN according to user code, geospatial region and field program.
- Sample Profile Get web service provides the user sample information according to IGSN.
- Sample Profile Update web service allows the user to update sample profile by uploading XML file.
- SESAR web services API documentation
- Useful SESAR web services Java Library
- Cyber Infrastructure Research and Development Lab for the Earth Sciences has developed a Java library to interact with SESAR web services. The project is hosted on Github (https://github.com/CIRDLES/GeoSamples). You can download the latest release and API documentation at https://github.com/CIRDLES/GeoSamples/releases. Additional functionality for uploading Sample metadata is being designed. Please feel free to contribute code, tests, documentation, etc.
IEDA OpenSearch Services
The MGDL OpenSearch collection-level service provides XML records as an Atom feed. The service URL template (where XXX is typically a cruise ID) is: /api/opensearch/1.1/collection/XXX ,
eg. http://www.marine-geo.org/api/opensearch/1.1/collection/EW9207
