Tephra Information Portal
The Tephra Information Portal is envisioned as a central point of access to data resources for the community of researchers who study tephra or need access to tephra data. TIP is being built as a collaboration between the Tephra Community and the IEDA2 data facility as part of the development of the Framework for FAIR Data Communities that IEDA2 will use to improve its services and support for existing and future data communities in IEDA2 (including EarthChem, SESAR2, and LEPR/traceDs) as well as the Astromaterials Data System.
IEDA2 is collaborating with the following tephra data providers to make their data holdings discoverable:
Best practices for FAIR Tephra Data

The tephra community has come together to align on best practices for tephra data collection, analysis and correlation.
Wallace, K.L., Bursik, M.I., Kuehn, S. et al. Community established best practice recommendations for tephra studies—from collection through analysis. Sci Data 9, 447 (2022). https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-022-01515-y
These best practice recommendations are the culmination of over 10 years of outreach activities, and have lead to the creation of a set of sample, method, and data templates that are community-endorsed and made publicly available in EarthChem.
Contributing a community resource
- If you have a standalone dataset, tephra samples, or analytical methods that need to be published and archived, there is an established framework for submission at the EarthChem Tephra Community.
- If you have a community resource (data system, tool, model, large literature compilation, etc.) and you would like it to be discoverable through the Tephra Information Portal, please register it below!
